Bangladesh, officially known as the People's Republic of Bangladesh (গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ), is a South Asian country rapidly emerging as a popular tourist destination. It is home to the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, and boasts the longest unbroken sandy beach at Cox’s Bazar. The country is situated on the largest delta in the world, formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers.

Bangladesh shares borders with India and Myanmar (formerly Burma), and its maritime territory in the Bay of Bengal is nearly equal in size to its landmass. It is the eighth-most populous country globally, with Dhaka as its capital and largest city, followed by Chittagong, the country’s main port. Other major cities include Sylhet, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, and Mymensingh.

The population of Bangladesh is predominantly Bengali, making up 98% of the inhabitants, with Bengali being the official language. The southwest of the country lies within the Bengal delta, home to over 700 rivers and an extensive network of roughly 8,000 km (5,000 miles) of inland waterways.

Although Bangladesh is often associated with floods and natural disasters, it is also known internationally for its natural beauty and historical sites. The Sundarbans, Cox’s Bazar, Paharpur Mahavihara, and the Mosque City of Bagerhat are key tourist attractions. Other notable destinations include the hill districts of Bandarban, Khagrachari, and Rangamati, as well as the cities of Sylhet, Khulna, and Rajshahi. The country offers a diverse landscape, from evergreen highlands and islands to ancient ruins of Buddhist monasteries, forts, and palaces. Its rich biodiversity includes the critically endangered Bengal tiger, the national animal.

Country Profile

Located in South Asia, Bangladesh is bordered by India on three sides and Myanmar to the southeast, with the Bay of Bengal to the south. The country’s population of approximately 120 million people inhabits an area comparable in size to the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

Most of Bangladesh is a low-lying plain, with elevations rarely exceeding 35 feet above sea level. The country’s 55,598 square miles are largely shaped by the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. The only variations in topography are found in the tea-growing highlands of Sylhet in the northeast and the forested Chittagong Hill Tracts in the southeast. Dhaka, the capital, sits less than 25 feet above sea level.

Bangladesh experiences three distinct seasons. The mild season, from mid-October to the end of February, offers sunny skies and cooler temperatures, making it ideal for travel to destinations like the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Cox’s Bazar. From March to May, the hot season brings rising temperatures, with early pleasant conditions giving way to intense heat and humidity. The monsoon season, from June to mid-October, cools the air with continuous rains, but high humidity can make the climate uncomfortable.

Bangladesh is frequently struck by tropical cyclones emerging from the Bay of Bengal, with an average of 16 cyclones per decade. Travelers, especially in coastal regions, should be prepared for flooding and cyclones during the monsoon season, as the unpredictable weather often disrupts daily life and agriculture.
